Believed to be a Celtic innovation of the 3rd Century BC, Chain Mail was designed to create flexible armour to protect from the infliction of swords and other weaponry during battle. Made by the repetitive linking together of metal rings followed by riveting each one closed, this incredibly laborious technique wove heavy mesh sheaths which were worn on the torso, limbs and head.
Drawing on a life-long inquisitiveness around the modern integration of age-old crafts, Maynes explores the artistic possibilities of this Medieval technique by crafting a sculptural form in it’s likeness. While confirming an assumed empathy for the original makers of Chain Mail, the resulting object suggests just how many centuries a craft can not only survive through re-interpretation, but also how it’s adapted purpose and materiality can create new-found relevance, expression and enjoyment in the modern world.
